John Ratzan MIS 587 Primal Blog

Hello World.

This is my primal blog on this particular blog service.

Please allow me to introduce myself...

I am a corporate business management consultant at Accenture (www.accenture.com) by day, an Ironman triathlete by morning and night (www.triathlete.com), an investor, and a wine entrprenuer / aficionado / connossieur by passion (www.vinoversity.com)!

I work with data every day in the payments and credit card space, and big data is central to a number of the initiatives that we work on.  Accenture (http://www.accenture.com/us-en/Pages/insight-digital-technologies-drive-market-growth.aspx) has a very large information management practice that helps companies with the exact issues that a number of the readings for this first week discussed.

In the credit card space, data is very important in 2 major ways.  The first is that it is the customer demographic information and then secondly, data is the byproduct of the payment transactions.

Combining these 2 major sets of data is very important for sales campaigns and offers since the data provides insights into behavioral activity for the consumer.

This data is similar to other behavioral data that is expressed on FB (Facebook) as well.

As a wine entrepreneur, I relish the ability to understand that if a person buys a Merlot on a Tuesday evening, they also typically buy a Chardonnay.  Understanding the causality of this is difficult, but seeing the correlation is easy if the data is presented in the proper fashion.

I am looking forward to supplementing my working knowledge of the big data topic with this formal coursework as well as continuing to work with the esteemed classmates that are part of this group.

I have posted up a few cool links and big data resources in FB this week, so take a look!

May the data be with you...

JR
